Burgundy is one of our favourite places to visit, and discovering wonderful restaurants is always a big part of the experience. On a previous trip, we’d had an incredible meal at Château de Cîteaux in Meursault, where chef Takashi Kinoshita was running the kitchen. It was one of those meals we remembered long after leaving, so when Jérémie discovered that the chef had opened his own restaurant, Les Murisaltiens in Meursault, we booked almost immediately.
We managed to get what I’m fairly certain was the last available table for lunch, and when we arrived to find the restaurant packed with locals, we knew we’d chosen well. The dining room itself is very simple, without the beautiful interiors or elaborate presentation you might expect from a fine dining restaurant, but we quickly discovered that none of that matters when the food is this good.
Simple Food, Exceptional Cooking
What surprised me most about Les Murisaltiens was how different the experience was from our meal at Château de Cîteaux. The cooking here is much less formal, with a menu built around traditional French and Burgundian dishes, but it’s just as precise.
Chef Kinoshita arrived in Burgundy from Tokyo in his early twenties, trained under Jean-Pierre Billoux in Dijon, and went on to win Gault&Millau awards at Château de Courban and Château de Cîteaux. At Les Murisaltiens he has swapped tasting menus for bistro classics, and the precision hasn’t gone anywhere.
We started with two very different dishes. Jérémie ordered the traditional Burgundy snails with parsley, hazelnuts and croutons, while I chose the garbure bourguignonne, a hearty soup with white beans and a poached egg. I loved my starter, and the bread was fantastic too, although I sometimes think it’s almost impossible to find bad bread in France!

For our main course, we both chose the roasted half chicken, served with garlic, thyme jus, mustard and crispy parsley. Jérémie went for the homemade fries, while I ordered the mashed potatoes because I have a particular weakness for French mashed potatoes. I don’t know how they manage to make them taste so much better, but I can rarely resist ordering them when they’re on the menu.
The chicken is the dish that really sums up what makes this restaurant so special. There was nothing complicated about it, but everything was cooked beautifully and the flavours were spot on. Roast chicken is something you can find in restaurants all over France, and yet this one was as satisfying as any elaborate fine dining dish. It’s a reminder that exceptional cooking doesn’t need complicated ingredients or fancy presentation.
We finished with the lemon meringue tart, which we both ordered. It was fresh, delicious and not overly sweet, exactly how I like my desserts. After such a satisfying meal, it was the perfect ending.
Incredible Food at Surprisingly Affordable Prices
As much as we loved the food, one of the biggest surprises was the price. Considering the quality of the cooking and the chef’s experience, Les Murisaltiens offers exceptional value.
You can order à la carte or choose from the set menus. During our visit, a two-course menu, either starter and main or main and dessert, was €29, while the full three-course menu was €39.
But there’s an even better deal if you’re visiting during the week.
From Wednesday to Friday, the restaurant offers a €19 lunch special that includes the dish of the day and dessert. On the day we visited, the main course was the same roasted half chicken that we ordered, with a choice of sides, followed by either an île flottante with Valrhona chocolate crème anglaise or fromage faisselle.
We were very tempted, but since we’d come specifically for Chef Kinoshita’s cooking, we went for the full three-course menu to try a little more of what was on offer.
Still, €19 for a lunch of this quality is remarkable, and I’d happily return just for that.
Why Les Murisaltiens Is Worth the Trip to Meursault
Les Murisaltiens is in Meursault’s former station café, a few minutes from the village centre. Meursault is a village we love visiting whenever we’re in Burgundy, but don’t come here expecting one of the region’s grand dining rooms. There are no elaborate interiors or unnecessary extras, just a busy local restaurant serving really wonderful food.
We came because we were already fans of the chef, and we left even bigger fans.
If you’re planning a trip to Burgundy, I’d recommend booking ahead. It’s the kind of restaurant I’d happily plan a day around, particularly if you’re already exploring Meursault and the surrounding wine villages.
We’ve already added it to our list of places to return to, and I suspect it won’t be long before we’re back.
