Located at the crossroads of both Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) and the Castle Road (Burgenstrasses), Rothenburg is well located to also explore the nearby cities of Nuremberg, Würzburg and Dinkelsbühl).

Zur Höll is a historic restaurant located in a beautiful medieval building. The name translates to "The Hell," and it is one of the oldest taverns in Rothenburg, offering a rustic and atmospheric dining experience. The wooden beams, low ceilings, and medieval charm create a cozy, intimate setting. The menu features hearty Franconian fare, including sauerbraten (pot roast), Schäufele (pork shoulder), and various game dishes depending on the season.
Gasthof Rödertor is a family-run restaurant located near one of Rothenburg's main gates, the Rödertor. This cozy guesthouse and restaurant offers traditional Franconian cuisine and is known for its warm and friendly service. The menu offers local specialties such as Bratwurst, Schäufele, and Kloß (potato dumplings). It’s a great spot to try hearty, traditional dishes in a relaxed, homey setting.

A must-try that you can find at any bakeries in town is Baurenbrot (farmer’s bread), spicy Hutzelbrot, Walnusskuchen (walnut cake), and lastly, Rothenburg’s specialty: Schneebälle – snowball-shaped treats that taste like shortbread and covered in anything from cinnamon and sugar to chocolate.
What to enjoy in the winter months
In winter, the town looks like a living Christmas card with the most atmospheric part being the 500-year-old Reiterlesmarkt (the Christmas market). It’s one of Germany’s oldest and best Christmas markets and looks like a fairytale with beautiful individual stalls against the backdrop of medieval town surroundings. What to enjoy in the summertime
August is a month of wine. The old town is turned into a “wine village” where 20+ Franconia wine makes showcase their wines, ranging from Sylvaners to ice wines. In September, the town hosts the annual Reichstad-Festtage (Imperial City Festival) where people dress up in medieval costumes. The festival features markets, torchlight processions, music, a thunder cannon and fireworks, and a play called Der Meistertrunk (the Master Draught) which commemorates an event from 1631 involving a former mayor.
