Discovering London in 48 Hours: Must-See Sights and Delicious Dining

London, a city where history meets modernity, offers an endless array of sights, sounds, and flavors. Even if you only have two days, like we did, the city’s charm will leave a lasting impression. From iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London to the London Bridge, you’ll find that each corner of London has something unique to offer.

Historical Sites

Buckingham Palace: Changing of the Guard

Buckingham Palace is one of the most iconic sites in all of London, and is an official royal residence for the British monarchy, including the late Queen Elizabeth II. It hosts many events throughout the year, for the Royal Family and all its guests, and is also open to victors year-round to see the elaborate decorated palace with almost 800 rooms. One of the most special events that takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, where the new guards that stand outside the palace gates arrive promptly at 11:00. A parade of music and marching guards follows the guards, leading them through the city and through the crowds of people waiting to see the change. If you want a spot right up by the gate, you might want to get there an hour or two early. Otherwise, there will still be room on the street to watch the ceremony.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is simply beautiful. It is the burial site for over 3,300 people, with ornate memorials and dedication that are open to the public to visit. The paid tour of the church is definitely worth the visit and it comes with an audio guide to fully understand the history you are walking over. Make sure to pay attention to the areas of the church that house the choir stalls, and don’t forget to look out for the Coronation chair.

You could spend about four hours at the Tower of London taking in all of the history! Tower of London is a historic castle that has attractions like the Crown Jewels of England, the Medieval Palace, and you can learn about the history of the prison the tower once held. General admission to the Tower gives you the opportunity to visit all of these sites and take it at your own pace, but feel free to book a tour with a Yeoman Warder, an official royal guard of the Tower. The Tower is also a great place to lookout over the Thames River and walk along the boardwalk from the many access points.

Through the walkways on the tower part of the bridge, see London uniquely walking on glass floors, or get the perfect view of the city. Don’t forget to check out the engine rooms as well to understand how the bridge was operated in the past. London Bridge is the perfect photo opportunity, walking through the busy, bustling streets!
